Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) is the evergreen tree of the Mediterranean, associated since antiquity with death, mourning, and the passage into the afterlife. As an incense, wood, needles, or cones release a tart, resinous, and fresh fragrance with a slightly smoky note.
In ancient Greek and Roman cultures, the cypress was sacred to Hades/Pluto and stood in cemeteries. In incense practice, cypress is used for mourning rituals, to accompany the deceased, for rites of passage, and to support life transitions. It is said to offer protection and strengthen the spirit in difficult times.
Use: Place needles, wood pieces, or cone scales on incense charcoal. A tart-resinous, Mediterranean fragrance.
