Yin and Yang (Chinese: 陰陽) is the fundamental principle of Chinese philosophy and cosmology – the idea that all phenomena in the universe are shaped by two complementary, mutually conditioning forces. The classic symbol shows a circle divided into a black (Yin) and white (Yang) field in a flowing S-curve, with each side bearing a small dot of the opposite color: within every Yin lies a seed of Yang, and vice versa.
Yin represents the receptive, dark, cool, feminine, passive, lunar – water, night, earth, stillness.
Yang represents the radiating, bright, warm, masculine, active, solar – fire, day, sky, movement.
Yin and Yang are not opposites in the sense of good and evil, but inseparable poles of a single whole, constantly transforming into one another. This principle underlies Taoism, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Feng Shui, and the martial arts.
As a symbol, the Yin-Yang sign reminds us that harmony arises not from suppressing one pole, but from consciously balancing both forces within us and around us.
