Cumin (Cuminum cyminum) is one of the oldest and most widely used spices in the world. As an incense, the seeds release a warm, intensely spicy and earthy aroma that instantly evokes Middle Eastern cuisine and traditional spice markets.
In the ancient world, cumin was used in protective and love-related incense rituals. Pliny the Elder described it as the best spice for stimulating appetite and aiding digestion. Burned as incense, it is said to offer protection, ward off thieves and rekindle passion in relationships.
Use: Place the seeds whole or lightly crushed on glowing charcoal. The smoke is intense and spicy — use sparingly.
