The Wheel of the Year designates the eight main festivals of the Celtic and neo-pagan annual cycle, which consecrate the rhythm of nature – sowing, growth, harvest and rest. They divide the year into four solar festivals (solstices and equinoxes) and four fire festivals (Samhain, Imbolc, Beltane, Lughnasadh).
Each festival has its own incense plants and rituals:
Samhain (31 Oct): Mugwort, juniper, ancestor smoke
Yule/Winter Solstice: Frankincense, myrrh, pine resin, juniper twigs
Imbolc (2 Feb): Snowdrop flowers, cedar, rosemary
Ostara/Spring Equinox: Jasmine, rose petals, lavender
Beltane (1 May): Elderflowers, hawthorn, marjoram
Litha/Summer Solstice: St. John's wort, lavender, sunflower petals
Lughnasadh (1 Aug): Grain, heather, sandalwood
Mabon/Autumn Equinox: Myrrh, elecampane root, cedarwood
Use: Burning incense in keeping with the rhythm of the seasons connects us with the natural cycle of life.
