The Caduceus (also Hermes Staff, Greek Kerykeion) is the winged symbol of the god Hermes (Roman: Mercury) – messenger of the gods, guardian of travellers, god of merchants, thieves and communication. It consists of a golden staff around which two serpents wind in opposite directions, crowned by two wings. Not to be confused with the Rod of Asclepius (one serpent), the symbol of medicine.
The two serpents symbolise duality and its unification: Yin and Yang, Sun and Moon, active and passive energy, the ascent and descent of consciousness. In alchemy and Hermeticism, the Caduceus stands for the Conjunctio Oppositorum – the union of opposites as a path to transformation. The wings point to the freedom of the spirit and the transcendence of material limitations.
As a spiritual symbol, the Caduceus reminds us that healing, communication and transformation arise through the balance of seemingly opposing forces – a timeless image of inner wholeness.
