Wiki / Copal

Copal is the collective term for various incense resins from Central and South America, obtained from trees of the genera Bursera, Protium and Dacryodes. The word comes from Nahuatl (copal-li) and simply means "incense". Depending on the origin, the fragrance varies from fresh-citrusy to warm-balsamic.

Copal is the sacred incense resin of the Maya and Aztecs and remains indispensable in indigenous ceremonies in Mexico and Guatemala today. It is used for purification rituals, offerings to the gods and communication with ancestral and nature spirits. Many varieties exist: Light, Gold, Negro, Peru – each with its own character.

Use: Place resin granules on incense charcoal. They melt quickly and release their fragrance immediately.
