Birch Bark from the Common Birch (Betula pendula) is a traditional incense of Northern Europe. It contains birch tar and various aromatic compounds that produce a characteristically smoky-sweet, slightly tarry fragrance when burned.
In Norse and Slavic traditions, the birch was a tree of purity, new beginnings and protection. Burning birch bark was used at spring festivals and purification rituals. It is said to free spaces from old energies and open them to the new.
Use: Place small pieces of bark on charcoal. The bark burns well and produces a beautiful white smoke.
