Wiki / Eaglewood / Oud

Eaglewood – also known as Oud, Agarwood or Agar – is considered one of the most precious and sought-after incense materials in the world. It forms inside the Aquilaria tree, native to the tropical rainforests of South-East Asia and China. The dark, resin-saturated wood develops as a reaction to a fungal infection – a natural process that takes decades.

The scent of Eaglewood is unique: warm, complex, profound and slightly animalic, with sweet and balsamic notes. In the Arab world, Oud is revered as the "perfume of kings" and is indispensable at every festive ceremony. In Japan, Eaglewood has been cultivated and taught in the art of Kōdō (the incense ceremony) for centuries.

Use: Small pieces of wood are heated on incense charcoal or in an incense burner (Mabkhara) without being burned directly. The resulting smoke is dense, long-lasting and of incomparable depth.
