Juniper Berries from the common juniper (Juniperus communis) are a traditional incense from Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and North America. The ripe, blue-black, frosted berries contain essential oils and release an intense, spicy-resinous, slightly camphorated fragrance when burned.
Juniper berries were regarded in many cultures as the most powerful protective agent against evil spirits and disease. In the Mediterranean region they were burned in large quantities during epidemics. In Norse tradition, juniper protects house and home. As an incense they are used for protection and purification rituals as well as rites of passage.
Use: Place whole berries on incense charcoal. A powerful, resinous-spicy smoke.
