Tonka Beans (Dipteryx odorata) are the seeds of the Tonka Tree from the rainforests of South America and the Caribbean. Their dried, wrinkled seeds contain coumarin and have an irresistible fragrance: warm, sweet, reminiscent of vanilla and almonds with a hint of hay.
Tonka beans have been known as a fragrance ingredient in perfumery since the 18th century. In Hoodoo practice and other magical traditions they are considered powerful bringers of love and luck. As an incense, the fragrance of the tonka bean is said to attract love, bring wishes to fulfilment and create a cosy, positive atmosphere.
Caution: Coumarin in large quantities is a health concern – burn sparingly. Use: Place small bean shavings on incense charcoal.
