Sandarac is an incense resin from the Sandarac Tree (Tetraclinis articulata), a coniferous tree from the mountain regions of North Africa and Spain. The light, yellowish-white resin granules burn with a fresh-resinous, slightly citrusy and balsamic fragrance.
Sandarac was an important trading commodity in the Middle Ages and was used as a varnish for paintings and documents, as a healing agent and as an incense resin. In North African and Moorish incense traditions it is valued for purification and as an everyday incense. As a spiritual agent it is considered clarifying and brightening.
Use: Place granules on incense charcoal. Fresh, resinous fragrance – a beautiful alternative to other conifer resins.
