Wiki / Elderberries

Elderberries from the Black Elder (Sambucus nigra) are not only known as a food but also have a long history as an incense. The dried berries release a slightly fruity, somewhat tart-bitter fragrance when burned.

In European folk magic, the elder is considered a "witch tree" and is under the protection of the Elder Mother (Mother Holle). Elderberries were used for protective incense, transition rites and to connect with the spirit realm. They are said to protect homes and farmsteads.

Use: Place dried berries on incense charcoal. Caution: fresh berries and all other parts of the elder are toxic when raw – use only dried berries.
