Hawkweed (genus Hieracium) is a widespread wild plant that plays a role in European folk magic and herbalism. The name derives from the tradition that hawks are said to strengthen their eyesight with the juice of this plant.

In European folk magic, hawkweed was used for protective incense and to enhance keenness of mind and perception. It is said to promote mental clarity and protect against deception. As an incense it is a rather rare, ancient agent of herbal magic.

Use: Place the dried herb on incense charcoal. The smoke is light, green and herbaceous.
