Valerian Root (Valeriana officinalis) is one of the best-known medicinal plants of Europe and has been used since antiquity to promote calm and sleep. As an incense, the dried root releases an intense, earthy and slightly musty fragrance – not to everyone's taste, but healing and deeply effective.
In the Germanic tradition, valerian (from "Baldur") was considered a sacred plant of the god of light. As an incense it is said to promote deep relaxation, dissolve nervous tension, open the mind to sleep and dreams, and reduce emotional stress. It is also known as catmint – cats react to it similarly to catnip.
Use: Place small pieces of root on incense charcoal. Burn before bedtime – promotes deep, restful sleep.
