Wiki / Asafoetida

Asafoetida (also known as "Devil's Dung" or Ferula assa-foetida) is a dried gum resin from the milky sap of a plant native to Iran and Afghanistan. In its fresh state it has a very intense, sulphurous-garlicky pungent smell – when burned, however, it transforms into a powerful, cleansing aroma.

In Indian cuisine, asafoetida is used as a spice; in magical and spiritual practice, however, it is above all known as a powerful repellent. It is said to drive away evil spirits, demons and negative energies with great force. In European folk magic, the Indian Tantra tradition and Hoodoo, asafoetida is a classic protective agent.

Caution: Very intense smell – use only tiny quantities and ventilate well. Use: Place tiny pieces on incense charcoal.
